• Begin pre-bariatric surgery meal planning. If given a specific pre-op diet please follow those instructions (Men and BMI >50). Otherwise, no concentrated sugar, low fat, high protein, 4-6 smaller meals per day, no meal skipping, eating every 3-4 hours. Set an alarm!
  • Begin an exercise program. Working up to a goal of 30 minutes of INTENTIONAL activity 3-4 times per week.
  • Begin a multivitamin (you will need chewable or liquid for the first 3 weeks — see handout).
  • Increase your fluid intake. Your goal is 64 oz per day (non-carbonated, decaffeinated, low or no calorie beverages).
  • Practice sipping from a bottle between meals and try not to drink with your meals.
  • Eliminate carbonated, sugar sweetened, and caffeinated beverages.
  • Practice mindful eating and stop eating when full.
  • Decrease high fat, fried and high sugar foods.
  • Decrease eating speed. Allow 20-30 minutes to finish a meal. Chew thoroughly.
  • Eliminate distractors while eating (TV, computer, driving).
  • Maintain or lose weight before surgery. Avoid the “last supper” mentality of indulging yourself with food and alcohol before surgery. This can lead to rapid enlargement of your liver and make surgery more difficult and possibly riskier.
  • Begin food journaling to increase your mindfulness to food/fluid choices and diet patterns.
