GALLBLADDER SURGERY

Gallbladder surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the world. But that doesn’t mean it is common for you, which is why we make your comfort, trust and safety our top priorities. Our expert surgeons at Anchorage Bariatrics are board certified in minimally-invasive abdominal surgery and have performed countless gallbladder surgeries (also known as cholecystectomy).

WHEN IS GALLBLADDER SURGERY NECESSARY?

Gallbladder removal surgery is necessary about 80% of the time when a patient has gallstones. It is also necessary if a gallstone is blocking a bile duct or if the gallbladder is inflamed and other treatments do not work. Gallstones can cause pain and discomfort, and in some cases, lead to serious complications like inflammation of the pancreas. In these situations, surgical removal of the gallbladder is often the best course of action to prevent further damage and alleviate symptoms. Our gallbladder surgeons at Anchorage Bariatrics can help prevent this issue from getting worse with our gallbladder removal procedures.

WHAT ARE GALLSTONES?

Gallstones are small, pebble-like deposits that can be found in the gallbladder, which is a small organ located just below the liver. The stones are typically made up of cholesterol, bilirubin, and other substances that are present in bile, a fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. Gallstones can vary in size and can cause pain and discomfort, especially if they block the bile ducts, which carry bile from the liver to the small intestine.

The symptoms of gallstones can vary from person to person, but common signs include a sudden and intense pain in the upper right side of the abdomen or in the center of the abdomen, often radiating to the back or right shoulder blade.

HOW DOES GALLBLADDER SURGERY WORK?

Our gallbladder surgeons use a minimally-invasive, laparoscopic technique for gallbladder removal. Patients are placed under general anesthesia for the length of the procedure. Four small incisions (about one inch long) are made into the abdomen. We use special scopes to locate, isolate, and remove the gallbladder and patients are typically released to go home the same day. Our goal throughout the entire process is to keep you safe, well informed and comfortable.
