TV shows are getting better and better each season and so are the writers – they sure know how to get you hooked!

So, how can you use your down time to get your heart rate up? Introducing “Streaming September!” The idea is to choose a TV series you can stream (binge watch) but only while exercising. That’s it – the only rule is if you’re watching this particular show, you’ve got to be moving your body.

Is there a new series coming out you’re excited to see, or maybe you’ve been out of the loop on a show all your coworkers can’t stop talking about? Set up your home theater; not with a big comfy couch but a simple exercise machine (treadmill or stationary bike), or some hand weights or tension bands instead! Most series episodes run 45 minutes to an hour – that’s a great length of time to exercise. Do this every time you watch an episode and by the end of the season, you’ll be down several pounds and feeling great!

Make exercising while watching TV a habit and you won’t feel the pressure of watching your exercise gauge at all. Exercising doesn’t have to be hard work – all you have to do is find what works for you and this is a great start. 5 Simple Exercise Moves You Can Do While Watching TV

  1. Lunges. The move has been around for ages and there’s a good reason why — they actually work!
  2. Jumping Jacks. Try doing as many as you can during each commercial break and you’ll be amping up your heart rate while burning some serious calories.
  3. Sit-Ups. Cosmopolitan recommends doing 25 reps twice during your favorite show’s commercial breaks, and to remember to reach your head up toward the ceiling.
  4. Chair Dips. For chair dips, begin by sitting on the edge of the chair with hands secured next to your hips. Slide your butt off the edge and begin to bend your elbows to a 90-degree angle. Slowly push back up and repeat 10 to 12 times.
  5. Planks. To do an effective plank, push your body up into an upward pushup position, with your toes curled under behind you and your hands flat and directly under your shoulders. Hold it for 30 seconds, and then release your body back to the ground.

Scheduling exercise at the same time every day is important if you’re trying to lose weight, because it helps make your workout a habit. If every day you’re deciding when you’re going to find time to exercise that day, it won’t happen. But if you have a set schedule, you’re much more likely to actually do it.

The Benefit of Watching TV While on a Treadmill

Rather than suffer through a workout they find boring, access to a TV can help make a long workout feel much shorter. Researchers in an article from “The New York Times” support the practice for both beginning and experienced runners, and they recommend comedies over dramas or mysteries so runners won’t lose their focus and reduce their pace as a result.

Interval Training During Commercials

Many people who watch TV while working out use the rhythm of regularly scheduled programming and ad breaks to do high-intensity interval training. During the program, they can run or walk at a comfortable speed. During the commercials, they can work at their highest speed and then return to their normal pace when the programming returns. The main benefit of interval training like this is that the timing of advertisements can be unpredictable. Such interval training may be more interesting than that provided by treadmill settings.

Multi-Task

When the latest episode of your favorite TV show airs, you might be tempted to skip a workout. However, if your TV screen is in view of your treadmill, whether you are at home or at the gym, there’s no reason not to enjoy your workout while you enjoy your program. Even if you’re using the treadmill at a moderate pace, you’re still burning calories you might otherwise have not consumed by sitting like a couch potato.
