When we think about losing weight, we automatically think about making changes to the way we eat and increasing our activity level. But what if these changes aren’t enough for us to lose the weight we want to lose? That’s when weight loss medications may be helpful!

Weight loss medication can be considered an important component in the overall plan to attain healthy weight goals. In order to qualify for these medications, your BMI or body mass index must be 30 or higher or at least 27 with a medical condition that is made worse by obesity. Examples of these conditions include high blood pressure, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol.

Prescription medications used to treat obesity work in different ways. Some of these medications may help you feel less hungry while others may help you feel full sooner. Some may do both. Others may make it harder for your body to absorb fat from the foods you eat. Your doctor will consider your history and health challenges to select a weight loss medication for you. Other important factors to consider include the likely benefits of weight loss, the medication’s possible side effects, your current health issues and other medications, your family’s medical history, and the cost.

The goal for weight loss using medications is a minimum of 5% of total body weight loss over a period of three months. Most patients experience weight loss of between 5-10% over the first three months of using these medications. If you do not lose 5% of your starting weight after 12 weeks of treatment, your health care professional will review your weight loss plan and make recommendations accordingly.

Weight loss medications aren’t an easy answer to losing weight. While they can be a successful component to weight loss, they don’t replace physical activity or healthy eating habits. Weight loss medications work best when combined with the necessary lifestyle changes.
