The depression – weight gain connection

Does depression really affect a person’s weight? Yes!

Scientifically speaking, a depressed person has elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The increase in cortisol also paves way to the rise in insulin levels, which would cause your blood sugar to drop and make you crave sugar and fatty foods.

Another point of view is that a depressed person does not have the energy or the drive to move, exercise or simply do anything. This would not only lead to weight gain but a lot of other medical issues like diabetes, heart diseases, body pains and more. These physical issues would require medication to alleviate, and some medications can cause weight gain, therefore exacerbating the problem.

So what can you do?

Open your window. Breathe that fresh air. Let the sunlight in (after all, we’ve got it just about 24/7 now!). Just clear your head and if you’re ready, step outside and take a walk… Just a few steps to get your blood flowing and lungs pumping. Taking those first steps can be the hardest, but you CAN do it. Small changes can really make a big difference in how you feel, both body and soul!

The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique to Relieve Stress

Deep breathing can help lower stress and improve your overall mood. Taking cleansing breaths when you feel upset, angry, or sad can send the message to your body that everything is OK, therefore reducing the stress response.

HOW TO DO IT:
To start, put one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. Take a deep, slow breath from your belly, and silently count to 4 as you breathe in. Hold your breath, and silently count from 1 to 7. Breathe out completely as you silently count from 1 to 8.

Doing this first thing in the morning and again right before bed will help your body relax and reduce tension.
