Meet Kristi, our own bariatric patient turned staff member, who has lost 95 pounds and kept it off for five years and counting. Kristi is so passionate about using bariatric surgery as a tool to change people’s lives, that she wanted to work with people going through the same things she went through. “By having the surgery, I’ve learned to be more forgiving and to listen to my body. I tell people now, don’t be ashamed to put yourself first and do something just for you. There are bumps along the way, but you can overcome them. The best thing about the surgery is that your energy comes back!”

I don’t have enough time to exercise
It is not easy to start doing something new, and exercise can sometimes be a tough thing to fit into your life. From a mental standpoint, you may think that you don’t have enough time to exercise – that may be true today, but it doesn’t have to be true tomorrow. With 168 hours in a week, there’s always a way to squeeze in 4-5 hours of exercise, you just have to plan it. Actually write it in to your weekly schedule. Put pen to paper and write down what time you wake up (and consider waking just 15 or 20 minutes earlier) then each time block for the rest of the day until bedtime. You don’t even have to exercise in one hour increments – 20 minute blocks three times a day is just as effective. Now that you’ve found the time, use it wisely and don’t feel guilty about doing something for yourself, as Kristi says!
An easy swap is to substitute a great tasting rub instead of a marinade. Marinades can be loaded with sodium, fat and sugar. Try using a rub seasoning instead – you can buy them already prepared at the grocery store or make your own out of ingredients in your spice rack and it is totally fat-free.
