Those “Before and After” pictures sure are compelling, but have you ever wondered what the “Middle” part really looked like? How does it feel to be in the middle of a weight loss journey? If the “After” seems unreachable sometimes, take a look at what Kat H. is doing and it just might change your mind.

At 367 pounds, Kat, a mother and grandmother, could barely make it through the day. The joint pain and fatigue from carrying around that much weight was really taking its toll, and Kat knew she needed to make a change in order to survive. She contacted Anchorage Bariatrics and began the New Directions diet plan about one year ago.

This July, Kat is down over 100 pounds from her starting weight, with about 100 more pounds to lose. With guidance and support from our Clinical Dietitian, Erika Van Calcar, and the Anchorage Bariatrics team, along with the well-laid out plans from New Directions, Kat feels that she can continue this journey with as much enthusiasm as she had on day one. “I don’t feel neglected or like I’m missing out on anything. I’ve just learned to eat differently and I’m surprisingly satisfied,” says Kat.

Learn more about Kat’s journey here, and check back with us next summer for an update on her progress!

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a joint-friendly exercise that is beneficial not only for the body but also the mind. The principle is mind and body integration through careful movements and proper breathing.

This form of exercise is great in losing weight because it works the body and the mind. The subtle but controlled movements burn calories and at the same time promote mindfulness, which helps alleviate stress and anxiety.

Stress is a big contributor to weight gain and this “meditation in motion” is just the right tool for relieving stress while burning calories through movements.

Green Tea for Weight Loss

Green Tea contains a high amount of catechins. Catechin is a naturally occurring antioxidant that boosts metabolism and aids in fat burning. It improves overall health by lowering the risk for cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.
