HOW DOES A LAP BAND PROMOTE WEIGHT LOSS?
The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, also known as a LAGB or lap band, is an inflatable silicone device surgically positioned around the upper part of the stomach to assist in weight loss. It works by reducing your food consumption and ultimately helping you achieve your desired body shape. The band also has an adjustable component that can be used to adjust its tightness, which affects how quickly food passes through your stomach.

Lap Band FAQ's
HOW IS THE LAP BAND SURGERY DONE?
The Lap Band® is performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. A plastic-like band is placed around the top of the stomach and connected to a port under your skin.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME FOR LAP BAND SURGERY?
This is an outpatient surgery (you go home the same day). You should plan on being off work for about 1 week. You will be on a liquid only diet for 3 weeks.
HOW DOES THE PROCEDURE INCREASE WEIGHTLOSS?
The Lap Band® works by reducing how much you can eat. By injecting the port under your skin with saline (water) we can inflate and deflate the balloon to make it tighter or looser. It is reversible and the device can be removed at any time.
WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM A LAP BAND?
Average weight loss is about 50% of your excess weight.
WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS ASSOCIATED WITH LAP BAND SURGERY?
As with any surgery there are risks. However, we have taken great steps to minimize these before and after surgery. You will learn a lot more about this in the office.
WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS FOR LAP BAND SURGERY?
The current national criteria for Lap Band® is that you must have a BMI > 40. However, if you are being treated for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea, or diabetes, you can qualify if your BMI is > 35.
