“I've struggled throughout my entire life. During my childhood, my mom would fix our plates. I would eat that, but when I was putting my dish away, I would sneak more food. I've tried so many diets over the years and even bought pills from watching infomercials to try to lose weight. I did lose weight but gained it all back. After having my daughter, I lost the baby weight, but then gained more despite trying to exercise. Nothing helped,” says Federica.
Federica would tire easily from taking short walks to the mailbox, going up the stairs, and taking care of her toddler. She felt like her heart was going to beat out of her chest sometimes. It got to the point where Federica couldn’t keep up with her daughter. Her daughter would want to get on the floor and play, but Federica just couldn’t.
“The turning point for me was the birth of my daughter and knowing that if I kept that weight on me, already huffing to get up the stairs, how much longer will I be here? I'm already an older mother. So now we have age on top of any other medical condition that can come from my weight. I knew I had to do something,” shared Federica.
Federica found Anchorage Bariatrics through a military spouses group where they were discussing how amazing Dr. Lee and Dr. Clark had been to other group members. She researched their website. She was impressed with what she saw and that led her to meeting Dr. Sean Lee.
“What I liked about Dr. Lee is how personable he is. He’s not judgy and he listens to me. He provided me with the realistic goals I needed. He educated me on the process, what things to look for, and understanding my body and how it works. I felt like I could ask him anything without being judged. One thing that made me really love him was when I told him I knew a young lady who had the gastric sleeve and she gained a lot of her weight back. He said, ‘that does happen, but we don't see that person as a failure, we see that the surgery failed, and we need to look at what the next steps are. That's why it's important to stay in contact. We're here to support you to get you back to where you need to be.’ Knowing you have that support with them was very comforting,” Federica affirmed. “They have support group meetings and you don't have to be a patient to attend. I love that because it shows they are not just here for their patients, but also for anyone else who needs help! They really believe in what they do - they're just not doing surgeries. From Dr. Lee to my dietitian, Erika, the whole team is amazing!”
After her recovery from her gastric bypass surgery, Federica felt like a new person. “I felt like I got my life back. I felt strong. Sometimes I don't believe the body I now have and what it can do. When I exercise, I’m surprised at my stamina and strength. I feel whole again. My back no longer hurts and I’m focusing on healthy habits. Even though I'd had weight loss success temporarily in the past, this feels different.”
Federica’s advice for anyone struggling with weight loss and considering bariatric surgery is to have trust. “Trust yourself and follow the plan - it will not lead you wrong. And give yourself grace,” encourages Federica.
