For surgical patients, most will have 1 or 2 pre-op consultations followed by 1 or 2 post-op consultations (or more if your insurance allows).
For non-surgical patients, visits can be arranged through a referral from your primary care doctor. While we check insurance coverage for bariatric patients, we don’t with individuals who are referred directly, so please check with your insurance company to see if, and how much, your insurance will cover. Please note that Medicaid and Medicare are not accepted; however, a cash payment plan is available.
A recent long-term study presented by Dr. Anthony Petrick highlighted the durable impact of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery on weight loss and diabetes remission. The study showed a stabilized 23% total body weight loss and a 38% diabetes remission rate 15 years post-surgery. Experts emphasized the significant, lasting effects of RYGB compared to newer weight-loss medications, positioning surgery as a reliable long-term intervention.

Bariatric surgery delivers the most substantial and enduring weight loss outcomes compared to GLP-1 receptor agonists (Ozempic) and lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. While lifestyle interventions led to an average 7.4% weight loss that was mostly regained within four years, GLP-1 drugs, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, achieved short-term weight loss up to 22.5%, though much of it was regained when treatment stopped. In contrast, gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy surgeries sustained weight loss of around 25% for up to a decade. The study advocates for earlier and broader adoption of bariatric surgery, emphasizing its safety, effectiveness, and underutilization despite the growing obesity crisis affecting over 42% of Americans.
