Niki R. Success Story

Growing up, food was always a part of Niki’s life. As an only child with a single mom, she remembers her grandpa picking her up from school and making it a tradition to stop at McDonald’s for a cheeseburger Happy Meal. It was the little things that made her happy, but as she grew older, food became more than just a comfort—it became her emotional outlet.
“I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was an emotional eater,” Niki shares. As she navigated adolescence, a challenging relationship with her dad, and later, the ups and downs of adult life, food became her go-to source of comfort. “I just turned to food during tough times, especially when relationships didn’t work out or life felt overwhelming.”
By her late 30s, Niki found herself watching My 600-lb Life on TLC, and a realization hit her hard—“I don’t want to live like this. I don’t want to live in this body.” It was then that she decided to make a change. She started working out and getting into fitness, finding something she loved in indoor cycling. But the battle with her weight was an ongoing struggle. “I’d lose a few pounds, then gain it back. It felt like an endless cycle.”
It wasn’t until COVID-19 hit and Niki realized her health was slipping that she made the decision to pursue bariatric surgery. “I had been thinking about it for a while, but the financial aspect was a huge hurdle. When I saw what was happening with my health and how my mom was taking care of my elderly grandmother, I just couldn’t let my mom take care of me like that.” Niki’s mom had been her rock, always supportive, but Niki didn’t want her to bear that responsibility any longer.
That’s when Niki found Anchorage Bariatrics and Dr. Justin Clark. “I found them through a Google search, and what really stood out to me was the trust factor. I saw that they were transparent, and their website had all the information I needed to make an informed decision.” She was impressed by the care and the attention to detail that Dr. Clark’s office offered, as well as the helpful, welcoming team, including providers like Kami and Shea, who became her cheerleaders throughout the entire journey.
On November 15, 2021, Niki underwent gastric sleeve surgery with Dr. Clark, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life. “The day of surgery, I was calm. My mom was more nervous than I was. But when I woke up, I felt okay. I was ready to start my recovery and get back on my feet.”
In the months that followed, Niki experienced a mixture of challenges and triumphs. “The first 90 days were tough,” she reca
lls. “You can’t really prepare yourself for what it’s going to be like until you’re in it. I had a lot of ups and downs, but I stayed determined.” Her weight steadily dropped, and within a year, Niki had lost over 180 pounds. But it wasn’t just about the numbers on the scale—it was about a transformation in how she felt. “I wanted to be able to go on adventures, live a full life, and be happy. I didn’t want to be trapped in my own body anymore.”
She also had to learn how to maintain her lifestyle changes. “It wasn’t easy,” she admits. “You have to work for it. I paid out of pocket for my surgery and I wasn’t about to let that go to waste.” Her motivation was sky-high, but she also faced moments of doubt. A major setback came in January of the following year when she gained 20 pounds due to personal stresses. However, with the support of her medical team, including Kami and Shea, Niki decided to try medication-assisted weight loss. “I was hesitant at first, but I’m glad I did it. It helped me push through.”
One of the crucial steps in Niki’s journey was the psychological evaluation she went through before surgery. “I knew I had to face my emotional triggers and be honest about my struggles. It wasn’t just about losing weight—it was about understanding the psychological side of it.” Niki was determined to be open about her issues, from her relationship with food to her personal challenges. “The psych evaluation wasn’t just a formality—it was a vital part of the process. It forced me to confront my emotions, my relationship with food, and the things that had held me back. You must be open and honest with yourself. The work you do mentally makes the real difference.”
With the continued support of her partner, Sean, and her growing network of friends in the bariatric community, Niki has embraced a life filled with new possibilities. One of her proudest accomplishments came just a year after surgery when she ran her first Run Disney race. “I never thought I could do it, but now it’s a regular part of my life. I’ve even been recognized by Disney!” She has continued to run, signing up for more races and feeling stronger every day.
“The most amazing part of this journey has been how people treat me differently now. When I first lost weight, people were shocked. They couldn’t believe how much I had changed. And honestly, it was a little overwhelming at first,” Niki says with a smile. “But now, I just try to take it in stride. It’s not personal—it’s just that they haven’t seen me in a while. I’ve learned to accept that.”
Niki’s transformation isn’t just physical; it’s emotional too. “I’m so much happier now. I feel like I’m finally living the life I was meant to live. I’m more mindful of my choices, and I’m grateful every single day. I wouldn’t have made it this far without the support of my partner, my family, and my friends.”
When asked what advice she would give others considering surgery, Niki’s answer is simple: “Do your research. Be realistic with yourself. It’s not going to be easy, but if you’re ready to commit, it’s worth it. It’s about working hard and pushing through the tough times. There will be bad days, but there will be way more good ones.”
