Niki R. Success Story

Growing up, food was always a part of Niki’s life. As an only child with a single mom, she remembers her grandpa picking her up from school and making it a tradition to stop at McDonald’s for a cheeseburger Happy Meal. It was the little things that made her happy, but as she grew older, food became more than just a comfort—it became her emotional outlet.

“I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was an emotional eater,” Niki shares. As she navigated adolescence, a challenging relationship with her dad, and later, the ups and downs of adult life, food became her go-to source of comfort. “I just turned to food during tough times, especially when relationships didn’t work out or life felt overwhelming.”

By her late 30s, Niki found herself watching My 600-lb Life on TLC, and a realization hit her hard—“I don’t want to live like this. I don’t want to live in this body.” It was then that she decided to make a change. She started working out and getting into fitness, finding something she loved in indoor cycling. But the battle with her weight was an ongoing struggle. “I’d lose a few pounds, then gain it back. It felt like an endless cycle.”

It wasn’t until COVID-19 hit and Niki realized her health was slipping that she made the decision to pursue bariatric surgery. “I had been thinking about it for a while, but the financial aspect was a huge hurdle. When I saw what was happening with my health and how my mom was taking care of my elderly grandmother, I just couldn’t let my mom take care of me like that.” Niki’s mom had been her rock, always supportive, but Niki didn’t want her to bear that responsibility any longer.

That’s when Niki found Anchorage Bariatrics and Dr. Justin Clark. “I found them through a Google search, and what really stood out to me was the trust factor. I saw that they were transparent, and their website had all the information I needed to make an informed decision.” She was impressed by the care and the attention to detail that Dr. Clark’s office offered, as well as the helpful, welcoming team, including providers like Kami and Shea, who became her cheerleaders throughout the entire journey.

On November 15, 2021, Niki underwent gastric sleeve surgery with Dr. Clark, marking  the beginning of a new chapter in  her life. “The day of surgery, I was calm. My mom was more nervous than I was. But when I woke up, I felt okay. I was ready to start my recovery and get back on my feet.”

In the months that followed, Niki experienced a mixture of challenges and triumphs. “The first 90 days were tough,” she reca

lls. “You can’t really prepare yourself for what it’s going to be like until you’re in it. I had a lot of ups and downs, but I stayed determined.” Her weight steadily dropped, and within a year, Niki had lost over 180 pounds. But it wasn’t just about the numbers on the scale—it was about a transformation in how she felt. “I wanted to be able to go on adventures, live a full life, and be happy. I didn’t want to be trapped in my own body anymore.”

She also had to learn how to maintain her lifestyle changes. “It wasn’t easy,” she admits. “You have to work for it. I paid out of pocket for my surgery and I wasn’t about to let that go to waste.” Her motivation was sky-high, but she also faced moments of doubt. A major setback came in January of the following year when she gained 20 pounds due to personal stresses. However, with the support of her medical team, including Kami and Shea, Niki decided to try medication-assisted weight loss. “I was hesitant at first, but I’m glad I did it. It helped me push through.”

One of the crucial steps in Niki’s journey was the psychological evaluation she went through before surgery. “I knew I had to face my emotional triggers and be honest about my struggles. It wasn’t just about losing weight—it was about understanding the psychological side of it.” Niki was determined to be open about her issues, from her relationship with food to her personal challenges. “The psych evaluation wasn’t just a formality—it was a vital part of the process. It forced me to confront my emotions, my relationship with food, and the things that had held me back. You must be open and honest with yourself. The work you do mentally makes the real difference.”

With the continued support of her partner, Sean, and her growing network of friends in the bariatric community, Niki has embraced a life filled with new possibilities. One of her proudest accomplishments came just a year after surgery when she ran her first Run Disney race. “I never thought I could do it, but now it’s a regular part of my life. I’ve even been recognized by Disney!” She has continued to run, signing up for more races and feeling stronger every day.

“The most amazing part of this journey has been how people treat me differently now. When I first lost weight, people were shocked. They couldn’t believe how much I had changed. And honestly, it was a little overwhelming at first,” Niki says with a smile. “But now, I just try to take it in stride. It’s not personal—it’s just that they haven’t seen me in a while. I’ve learned to accept that.”

Niki’s transformation isn’t just physical; it’s emotional too. “I’m so much happier now. I feel like I’m finally living the life I was meant to live. I’m more mindful of my choices, and I’m grateful every single day. I wouldn’t have made it this far without the support of my partner, my family, and my friends.”

When asked what advice she would give others considering surgery, Niki’s answer is simple: “Do your research. Be realistic with yourself. It’s not going to be easy, but if you’re ready to commit, it’s worth it. It’s about working hard and pushing through the tough times. There will be bad days, but there will be way more good ones.”

In many cases, there’s more to weight gain than just overeating. Obesity can result from underlying psychological issues that, if left untreated, can spiral to the point of seriously impacting quality of life. At over 500 pounds, Dennis R. was not able to enjoy life to the fullest. He isolated himself, despite having a supportive network and a job he is passionate about. Dennis shares his story of redemption, overcoming addiction and how his obesity was brought on by mental stress a lifetime in the making, in hopes of inspiring others. Dennis’s story is not an overnight success and his journey proves one’s discipline and persistence gives great results. Dennis’s family moved around a lot when he was a child. He was born in New Mexico, moved to Alaska as a toddler, and landed in Arkansas during high school. “I felt like a fish out of water,” describes Dennis. “Talk about culture shock, going from Alaska to the deep South. It was hard to make friends and I coped with that by eating an entire pizza daily after school. I gained over 100 pounds during my junior and senior year. My favorite sport was basketball, but the coaches said I was too heavy to play. I turned to football and played on the offensive line, earning a spot on my college team and eventually playing semi-pro ball.” Dennis traces his weight gain back to 1990. “The stress of moving from Alaska to Arkansas was really what kick-started the gaining for me, but I continued to make poor life choices in other areas as well as my diet. I eventually failed out of college, which only added to the emotional stress,” laments Dennis. “My weight was getting really out of control, so I tried diets like NutriSystem but as soon as I stopped them, the weight would come back and then some. I would lose up to 70 pounds and then gain it all right back.” Dennis was dealing with life-threatening medical conditions as his weight crept past 500 pounds. “I could hardly walk. I was constantly going to the hospital with swelling in my legs, chest pains, and cellulitis. I was taking multiple medications for diabetes and blood pressure,” Dennis says. “My coping mechanisms were consumption. I dealt with alcoholism and drug addiction by getting sober in 2006, but I never dealt with my food addiction and it was slowly killing me.” Dennis reached his breaking point in 2018. “I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. If I left the house, strangers would come up to me out of the blue and recommend weight loss surgery. It was embarrassing having to buy two seats on an airplane and buy size 7X shirts,” Dennis says. “I knew I needed surgery and as was the case with overcoming my addictions, I knew I had to be persistent and just do it. I looked at two bariatric practices in Alaska, and Anchorage Bariatrics really struck me as the place I needed to go. They have a great website and everything I read about them made me feel comfortable. I booked an appointment and was so glad I took that first step! The Anchorage Bariatrics staff are so friendly. Erika, Kristi and Tim are so supportive and understanding. Erika walked me through the whole process, the diet I would follow pre- and post-surgery, and answered all my questions. I love Anchorage Bariatrics. They feel like family.” In his first consultation with Anchorage Bariatrics, Dr. Clark told Dennis that he had to lose weight before surgery. A determined Dennis lost 43 pounds before his next appointment and Dr. Clark was impressed and approved surgery. Today, Dennis exercises daily. He walks during his lunch breaks and walks his dogs more, sometimes racking up six miles on a weekend. He says he thinks about his meal plan and makes sure he has everything he needs to prepare healthy meals. At only five months into his journey, Dennis has lost over 100 pounds; gone from a 56” elastic waistband to a 48; dropped three shirt sizes; doesn’t have to get a seatbelt extension on an airplane any more; and went canoeing for the first time since 1990! He is also weaning off his other medications and feels blessed not having to go to the ER all the time. “I used to isolate, I never wanted to go out of the house and be seen, I never wanted to talk to anyone, and I had very low self-esteem. Now, I go out to restaurants and go out in public and I don’t mind it. I have more energy now than I ever had,” shares Dennis. “The new stomach pouch created by my sleeve gastrectomy is a tool, not a cure all. I’ve learned that food is not everything. It used to be such a big deal for me, but now it isn’t all-consuming. I’m learning how to live and eat sensibly and it feels amazing,” Dennis says. “I’m grateful for all of the support from Anchorage Bariatrics, especially the psychological team, and I look forward to losing the next 100 pounds. You’ll hear from me again next year and you bet I’ll be at my goal weight. Nothing can stop me now!”

Since her Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure, Jennifer, an associate broker for a real estate company, has lost a total of 142 pounds. Jennifer shared, “While my childhood was average, during my teen and adult years, I yo-yoed over and over again with my weight. Diets worked initially, but I would hit a roadblock and once I would stall out for so long and didn’t see a difference, it was hard to stay motivated and I’d fall right back into the same issues.” Jennifer tried Weight Watchers and was successful for a while, but she could never prioritize working out.
