What Is Laparoscopic Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass?

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a type of weight loss surgery. It is one of the most commonly performed types of bariatric surgery. This procedure is done when diet and exercise haven’t worked or when you have serious health problems because of your weight. These health problems can include heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, stroke, cancer, and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery gets its name from the way it changes your digestive system. Roux-en-Y is a French term that means “in the shape of a Y.” The gastric bypass works in three ways. First, it restricts how much you can eat because the stomach is smaller. Second, because a portion of the intestines is bypassed, less of the food you eat gets absorbed. Third, it also greatly affects your gastrointestinal (GI) hormones to make you less hungry and help your body regulate weight better.
The gastric bypass is performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Four or five small incisions are made, all less than 1 inch long. A new small stomach pouch is made to be about the size of an egg. Then, the intestines are rerouted to the new pouch and about 25% of the intestines are bypassed. Nothing is removed. The old stomach stays in place and still makes digestive juices.
The procedure can provide long-term weight loss. The average results of weight loss after having gastric bypass surgery are 65-75% of your excess weight. The amount of weight you lose will depend on changes you make in your lifestyle habits when it comes to nutrition and exercise. Gastric bypass may also improve or resolve health conditions that are related to being overweight.
Not everyone qualifies for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. Your doctor may advise it if you are severely obese with a body mass index (BMI) over 40. It may also be advised if you have a BMI between 35 and 40 along with a health condition that is related to being overweight.
